Seasons Greetings
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all NGSU members and their families a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. I hope that you all have a relaxing break and enjoy the festivities.

It has been a very difficult year for everyone working at Nationwide but particularly for those involved in change programmes and redundancies. The financial uncertainty that redundancy brings is especially acute at this time of year and I hope that 2010 brings new and positive opportunities for them.

The ongoing economic difficulties will continue to create a tough operating environment for Nationwide and consequently for employees. I hope that further change will be kept to a minimum but I am also hopeful that we can work with the business to manage change in a constructive way should the need arise. Although the employee relations climate has not been the best over the past couple of years I do detect a greater willingness from the business to engage with the Union and to listen to our views on behalf of members. For our part we will continue to do all we can look after the interests of individual members and the membership as a whole.

Talks are currently still on-going in relation to the Job Security Policy and we have recently been discussing how the Society can best manage its desire to create a more flexible approach to meeting customers' needs - in a way that takes into account the personal circumstances of employees. So far these have been encouraging talks and I hope to be in a position to update members about these issues over the next month or so.

We are still seeking more Representatives to help us keep in touch with members and to participate in consultation on matters affecting employees. If you've been thinking about becoming a Rep please contact us - we'd love to have the opportunity to talk to you about what's involved.

Best wishes

Tim Poil
General Secretary

Joint Consultation Committee
The Joint Consultation Committee (JCC) is a sub-committee of the Employment Involvement Committee (EIC) and provides a regular and formal opportunity to discuss matters impacting on employees. The following summary of the November meeting has been agreed.

MEETING HELD: 19 November 2009
PRESENT: Darren Palmer, Senior Manager Employee Relations
Antonia Humphreys, Employee Relations Consultant
Tim Poil, General Secretary NGSU
Tim Rose, Assistant General Secretary NGSU
GUESTS: Barbara Duffy (People Performance & Development); David Edwards and Iain Ruisling (Information Security)

The Joint Consultation Committee received a presentation from Barbara Duffy relating to the half year performance ratings and the Leadership framework which is being launched within the Society.
Changes to the Communications and Privacy Policy were discussed and agreed, and will be communicated to employees early 2010 before they take effect. The NGSU raised questions over the operation of discretionary bonus arrangements, and it was agreed to further discuss this at a future JCC.

Previous discussions regarding working flexibly continued and it was noted that additional meetings were already arranged outside of the JCC to further progress these discussions. Changes to the EIC Committee structure and assigned NGSU representatives were discussed in light of changes made to Executive Director areas of responsibility. The NGSU raised questions over communication with the NGSU of arrangements for adverse weather conditions, correspondence in Fair Treatment at Work procedures and the recording of extended holiday scheme leave, and a number of actions were accordingly agreed.

e-Christmas cards from the NSPCC
If you've just not got round to buying Christmas cards yet or need to send a last minute greeting why not take advantage of the e-Christmas card service from the NSPCC?

Available from the NSPCC website, you can create your own design from a range of backgrounds and festive images (we particularly like the bouncing elf!). The service is free but you can make a donation online to help support the valuable work of the NSPCC.
Tax Refund Service
Since we introduced members to the Tax Refund Service a couple of years ago around 20% of members have taken the opportunity to have a free tax assessment. The total tax refunds recovered for NGSU members currently stands at £46,660 and the average tax refund is £186.64.

The service is operated on a no refund - no fee basis. For every £1 of overpaid tax recovered members keep 60p and then benefit from all future savings. If the Tax Refund Company find that you owe tax they will tell you but not the Inland Revenue - this is a confidential service between you and the company.

An assessment form was included in the recent edition of Rapport sent to members earlier this month. To download another form or to find out more visit our website.
